A Retreat With Brother Lawrence and the Russian Pilgrim: Praying Ceaselessly (Retreat With-- Series)
Published in Paperback by St Anthony Messenger Press (April, 2000)
Authors: Kerry Walters and Gloria Hutchinson
Average review score:

A Primer in centering prayer
This little book is a reflective how-to manual on continuous prayer/meditation. It takes the reader step by step to the point where he or she is ready to practice what today we would call the centering prayer. It was the text for a workshop on prayer I recently attended, and all of the participants agreed it was a great help. It's also a great guide to books and movies that deal with prayer and meditation.

Super!
I wish Walters has written this book 25 years ago, when I was struggling (fruitlessly) with prayer. My failure to make any sort of meaningful connection soured me on the whole thing for the next twenty years. Walters hits the nail on the head in this step-by-step retreat on prayer/meditation. The problem I made years ago, and the problem too many other people make, is that we try too hard when it comes to praying. Letting go is a lot more difficult than grabbing onto. Anybody who wants a richer prayer life will cherish this little book.

I've read it twice
I don't much like your typical retreat or howtodoit spirituality book, but this one is different. The best way to describe it is a Zen approach to Xtian prayer, where the reader/retreatist discovers that he's the riddle that needs to be solved. Very good. (although I can't figure out what the description listed by amazon.com has to do with the book. seems like it should be for another book)

Deep Enough: A Working Stiff in the Western Mine Camps
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (March, 1993)
Authors: Frank A. Crampton and W. H. Hutchinson
Average review score:

A true American "outback" experience
A great way to learn about life in the American wild west arid zone in the early 1900's. The author describes his life experiences with a rich cast of rugged characters who are hard to find these days. If you have either visited or lived in a mining town or been to the Australian outback opal diggings, you'll have extra appreciation for the entertaining detail and perspectives on what really is important in life. One of the better books I have read in a while!

Simply put - the most interesting book I've ever read!
I live in Arizona and picked this book up in a map store. Once I started reading I couldn't stop. The style of Frank Crampton's writing is so descriptive that you feel you are listening to him tell the stories of his life as a hard rock miner in Arizona. This is not a documentary, but accounts told by the one that lived them. One chapter is so graphically described that I could feel the pain of the miners. This chapter is followed by the funniest of any I have read. I have used this book as a guide book of the mines and ghost towns of this area and have found many of them. I've given this book as a gift to many people and highly recommend it for anyone interested in the old west and mining.

If one has ever worked underground in a mine this book is a
Frank Crampton didn't have to become a tramp miner, he chose too. Born well conneced, he gave it all up to discover what it is like to become a working stiff in the western mines. His discriptive writings of the every day workings under ground are so real one can smell the powder after a blast. His experience while being traped under ground in the Bingham Canyon Mine, and being cold boiled, made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. The loyalty of his fellow miners to rescue his crew, espically his two old friends who traveled hundreds of miles to help get Frank out can only be understood by a miner of that era. Frank Crampton's drive for self improvement is in it's self a blueprint for any young person to succeed the hard knocks of life. The Frank Crampton's built this country, what a wonderful gift he left us.

Third Edition Is In !
Up-date - January 18, 2000 - The Environmental Studies Center Bookstore just received a shipment of the Third Edition of Florida Flavors. It's still great! If you've been waiting, go on in.

As a Co-Chairman in Production of Florida Flavors
When I was approached to co-chair this book with Barb Hendry as a benefit to The Environmental Studies Center of Martin County in Jensen Beach, Florida, I readily accepted. Work began immediately. Since we were both native Floridians we wanted the book to reflect the unique bounty found in the ocean, our rivers and our backyards. First we selected recipes of many oldtimers. Then we chose chapter chairman among the best cooks in Martin County. Over forty people volunteered their time and talents in this production. A year later we went to print. With the generous financial support of our community we published 10,000 copies for our first edition. Over a hundred local merchants sold the books, giving our charity all the money received from sales. The books sold out with enough interest to produce a second edition. The Environmental Studies Center continues to excel in educating Martin County's children about the uniqueness of the area's wildlife, ocean reefs, barrier islands, estuaries, savannas, rivers, wetlands and hammocklands and the importance of their preservation. The sale of over a million books for a small town charity cookbook is an overwhelming endorsement. Therefore, I give it five stars. As the third edition is being printed, a waiting list includes my name....again.

Florida Flavors: for Natives and Newcomers
It's a GREAT cookbook...used it since 1984 and wouldn't be without it. 3rd printing is due out in March 2000. Recipes are from the BEST cooks in Martin county...they're simple to use and delicious to the taste. Once you've opened the book you'll feel really good about cooking and Florida...and the book cover print of old Florida by James Hutchinson is something extraordinary! Try it....you'll love it!

Beyond O.J.: Race, Sex and Class Lessons for America
Published in Paperback by Impact Pubn (November, 1996)
Author: Earl O. Hutchinson
Average review score:

Very DEEP
DR.Hutchinson Has A Great Mind. The Way He Connects things&Speaks is always on The Money.OJ was The Latest To Learn The Hard Truth.ANY Black MAN IN AMerica Can Be Like OJ At ANY TIME.that's the Reality of This SOciety.DR.Hutchinson does a Great Job of Presenting Other Examples.everone is accountable for their actions&what not but MR.Hutchinson's Knows that A Black MAN IS COnsidered GUILTY NO MATTER WHAT.That's THe SAD REALITY&INJUSTICE that We Face. His Words Always Hit Home.Very Much ON POINT.

Superb & Scholarly Approach
Out of all the millions of words printed on the Simpson case, Dr. Hutchinson's is head and shoulders above them all. He emphasizes the true meanings of the case, accurately identifying race, sex and class as being what was on trial in America. That I found his book in a tiny public library in the Deep South is perhaps an indication that there's hope for us all...I like to think that lots of us 'down here' will learn something from Dr. Hutchinson. Note: the bibliography in this book is outstanding...a study guide of and in itself!

It's not just about OJ, but all black men in America!!
Looking for a book you literally can't put down?

Even though the 1995 OJ/Brown/Goldman tragedy is well behind us (or should be), racism continues to plague American society. Why?

It didn't begin with OJ and unfortunately will not end with his story. Dr. Hutchinson's mountain of research weaves together the compelling stories of OJ, boxer Jack Johnson, Iron Mike Tyson, tennis great Arthur Ashe, superstar Michael Jackson, basketball/baseball's Michael Jordan, and even multi-millionaire Magic Johnson. Is there no escape for a black man accused of improprieties? Dr. Hutchinson contends that neither money, fame, nor professional connects will shield a carefully protected, and long-held pristine reputation once accusations or unfounded rumors begin to fly. Dr. Hutchinson also dissects the disparity between media treatment of blacks and whites, and pinpoints how television news, newspapers, and national magazines add fuel to the smoldering tinderbox.

Standard Handbook for Secretaries
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill (June, 1969)
Author: Lois Irene Hutchinson
Average review score:

Fifty Years as a Writer's Best Friend
Since the late 40's when I was working as a secretary part-time to finance my university courses, I have relied on the Hutchinson Handbook to solve my every language dilemma. It was at my right hand as I typed my husband's doctoral thesis, and it settled many an argument years later with our teen-aged children (who chanted "but our teacher said!"). I have given it to European colleagues who are often understandably perplexed by our wonderfully unpredictable language. They love it, and I continue to keep it by my computer at all times. It is undoubtedly too late to let Ms. Hutchinson know the value of her contribution over the years, but I hope that my testimony may bring it to the attention of other wordsmiths.

Item Came in Great Condition!
Although the printing was older than I anticipated, it was in EXCELLENT! condition and all the information I need is in it. It will help keep me in tune with other administrative personnel who own the same book. Thanks!

The best reference book I've ever met.
This is a reference book of English language grammar and usage. I have been using the 8th edition of this book for 20 years. It is hard to imagine that a 20 year old reference book could be more complete and up-to-date than any more recent book I have seen, but this one is. It is also easier to use than any other book I have seen. However, if anyone is thoroughly familiar with this book and yet knows of a better one, please let me know! Thanks.

Against All Odds: Speaking Naturally With Idioms
Published in Paperback by Newbury House Pub (December, 1997)
Author: Marie Hutchinson Eichler
Average review score:

It teaches hundreds of idioms in their everyday contexts.
This is the most sophisticated idiom text I've seen in my 7 years teaching ESL. Ideal for the intermediate to advanced student, It includes the most-used phrasal verbs as well as expressions. The excercises are well designed matching, cloze, and conversation/role plays. What a pity if it's not re-published soon!

I want the book would be reprinted as soon as possible.
Against All Odds : Speaking Naturally With Idioms by Eichler: I am sure the book would be very helpful for foreigners to want to practise English. Please let foreigners buy it.

All Summer Long (Superromance, 1000)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (July, 1901)
Authors: Muriel Jenson, Judith Arnold, Bobby Hutchinson, and Muriel Jensen
Average review score:

Perfect summer reading
"Daddy's Girl" by Judith Arnold. Kevin Medina loves his one-year-old child Alix, but worries that he will lose custody of his beloved daughter. Court appointed Family Services worker Natalie Baines will make a recommendation to the court on who should raise Alex, but she wonders if she can remain neutral when she loves the father as much as his baby?

"Home, Hearth and Haley" by Muriel Jensen. Lawyer Bart Megrath left Florida to travel to colonial looking Maple Hill, Massachusetts to bail his friend's sister out of jail. However, he wonders who will bail out his heart as he falls in love with his volatile client, Haley Whitcomb.

"Temperature Rising" by Bobby Hutchinson. In Vancouver, most of the professional staff at St. Joseph's Hospital respect Dr. James Burke for his incredible trauma surgical talent, but try to avoid him anywhere outside the operating room, as tact is not his code word. However, chief operating official Melissa Clayton knows first hand about James' abrupt manner, but still cannot protect her heart from desiring the curmudgeon surgeon.

All three tales are powerful stories due to deep believable characters and engaging relationships that lead to enticing tales. Readers will relish this anthology that is a return to the "daddy school" and the ER wars of St. Joseph's as well as the opening gamut of a new miniseries.

Good enough to last all summer long
Harlequin Superromance celebrates two decades with ALL SUMMER LONG, a collection of three novellas by Judith Arnold, Muriel Jensen and Bobby Hutchinson. While unrelated, they are united in their presentation of conflict and romance.

"Daddy's Girl" by Judith Arnold: A child custody case brings Kevin Mdeina, one-year-old Alex and social worker Natalie Baines into a collision course. He fears every nuance, every subtlety, every implication of his words out of concern of what he might reveal to this woman who holds the power to influence the removal custody of his child, and because he's attracted to her. She holds her distance because he represents a conflict of interest when she must only concern herself with the child's best interest.

"Home, Hearth and Haley" by Muriel Jensen: When his best friend's sister lands in jail, lawyer Bart Megrath finds himself bailing Hellfire Haley Whitcomb out of jail. He's up to the task, however, despite the fact her last lawyer was carried out on a stretcher.

"Temperature Rising" by Bobby Hutchinson: Dr. James Burke understands the power of healing, but doesn't understand the power of the heart until he encounters hospital administrator Melissa Clayton. Melissa is just the woman to give James a lesson in bedside manners.

Characterized by strong characterizations emotional intensity, ALL SUMMER LONG presents three strong tales of romance. Jensen's novella launches the beginning of her Men of Maple Hill series, and Hutchinson's novella introduces her Temperature Rising series. This collection comes very highly recommended.

how to get it in China
Hi! Editors. I am Yanbei Liou from China, and my callsign is Bd2bh.I Iike the ARRL Handbook for Radio Amatures 2001 very much. For I had read it for many years (1987),but i never read it newly again. Like all hams in China I could not get it, and hope it will be published in China, and be bought

The Radio and Electronics Reference Manual
The 2001 edition of The ARRL Handbook is the latest and most up-to-date version of an excellent reference book for both the Amateur Radio operator or anyone interested in RF engineering. The Handbook contains information on the basics of radio operation and practices and detailed information for the RF engineer needing to know technical component details. The ARRL has again designed a wonderful book that will provide information for all levels of hams. Information on the new HF digital modes is provided, as well as the old standards of voice and CW. For those wanting to know the theory behind the radios, the ARRL focuses on the technical details - the how and why - of the radios and the modes, so that when you walk away from this book you will know the answer to your question (and a lot more if you keep reading!) The only real negative comment on this book is that there is a LOT of very technical information. This can make finding exactly what you want to know a challange, as it takes a little digging and knowing exactly what you are looking for. A very complete index does make this much easier. However, for the beginniner this book would do well to whet your appetite for venturing deeper into Amateur Radio, and for the master RF engineer this book serves well as a very detailed technical reference that can aid in every day engineering questions.

Plato Complete Works
Published in Hardcover by Hackett Pub Co (May, 1997)
Authors: Plato, John M. Cooper, and D. S. Hutchinson
Average review score:

Required Reading for Anyone Interested in Western Civ.
Plato, Complete Works is a must for the bookshelf of anyone interested in philosophy. Cooper's and Hutchinson's edition contains all Plato's known works and even some that might not be his, but are associated with him in some way. The translations are generally well-written and their style more up-to-date and readable than some older translations. As reviewers said before, this book is necessary if you want to understand philosophy and its history.

Except for some of the shorter works, (Euthyphro, Apology, Symposium), Plato's works are not easy to read. Some works are so dense and difficult that you can't see the point of his argument (e.g., Parmenides). If you need some help interpreting Plato, a good introduction to his work is G.M. Grube's Plato's Thought. It provides clear exposition on a number of subjects, including the theory of ideas, the nature of the soul, education, and statecraft.

One needs to decide whether Plato's thought is vital today or just historically important. Those who treat Plato as important today fall into one of two groups. There are those who think he is the source of that evil called Western Civilization. Post-modernists see modern philosophy as a series of rhetorical tropes started by Plato. They hold him responsible for the metaphysical nonsense espoused in philosophy today about reality, objectivity, and knowledge. If you think Plato is total nonsense and think his characters Protagoras (man is the measure of things) and Thrasymachus (might makes right) are largely correct, you might want to compare his work to Derrida or Nietzsche.

Then there are the Hellenists. They think that Plato said it all and nothing (or not much) more needs to be said. You usually get Alfred North Whitehead's quote here about philosophy being a series of footnotes to Plato. If you are so enthralled, you might want to try Allen Bloom, Stanley Rosen, or Leo Strauss.

Personally, I think both readings are wrongheaded for the same reason. In the 19th and 20th centuries especially, philosophy has made conceptual advances on Plato. Frege's logic, Kuhn's history of science, Peirce's communitarian pragmatism, and Wittgenstein's later language theory step beyond Plato.

If Plato is important today, it is for what he started, not what he says. He began the philosophical fields that are still popular areas today, including metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and politics. And he invented the character of Socrates, through which he developed the notions of dialectic and definition. For these reasons alone, Plato's works should be read carefully and often. The fact that you get all of them here in one relatively inexpensive book (at least in terms of price per work) should be incentive enough to buy it.

One of the great books of all time
In ancient times, Plato was regarded as one who writes most beautifully, and even in translation his mastery comes forward.

Reading this book, you are at the beginning of philosophy. There are beautiful dialogs concerning the most profound questions anyone can ask.

An advantage of this particular book is that for a reasonable price you can own Plato's complete works in modern scholarly translations. The volume is skillfully edited and there are handy notes.

Plato is one of the few philosophers who can be read for pleasure. His influence on Western thought is immense. As Whitehead says, subsequent Western philosophy is just footnotes to Plato.

Here are some of the works collected in this volume -

Apology - Socrates defense of his life

Phaedo - a defense of the immortality of the soul

Euthyrpo - a criticism of the Divine Command theory of ethics

Republic - the ideal commonwealth, what is justice, theory of ideas

Meno - the recollection theory of knowledge

Timaeus - Plato's story of the creation of the universe, his cosmology

Plato was a Master
I have not read every narration and account in this huge book yet but so far I am extremely happy with it. First, Plato's works are wonderful and somehow maintain a freshness even after reading through several in a row. The threads of logic woven through these works are a delight and I have found myself laughing aloud occasionally at the near sarcasm I feel I'm reading - Socrates often comes across as a quick-tongued smart-A**.

The translation is free-flowing and up-to-date. If you can read English, buy this book. If not, learn to and then buy this or have someone read it to you. It is that good and that important.
